CABE Student Leadership Award Winners 2024

Middletown Public Schools proudly announces that two of its 8th-grade students, Liliana DeMerchant and Mason Belair, have been awarded the Student Leadership Award from the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE). DeMerchant and Belair were nominated for the award by Mr. Raymond Byron, Beman Middle School’s Principal, who recognized their exceptional leadership qualities and contributions to the school community. Their willingness to take on challenges, make difficult decisions, and work collaboratively with others underscores their suitability for this honor. The two students were honored at the Middletown Board of Education’s May meeting on May 14, 2024.

Dr. Alberto Vázquez Matos, Superintendent of Schools, stated, "We are proud of Liliana and Mason for earning the CABE Student Leadership Award. Their dedication to their studies, extracurricular activities, and community service is inspiring. They exemplify the qualities of outstanding leaders, and their achievements reflect the supportive and nurturing environment here in Middletown Public Schools."

Liliana DeMerchant, Grade 8

Liliana DeMerchant, the President of the Beman Middle School Student Council and a member of the Principal’s Advisory Board, embodies the essence of a student leader. Liliana excels in communication, collaboration, and diplomacy. Her dedication to developing her leadership style is evident through her involvement in various school activities and sports. Recently inducted to the TriM Music Honor Society, Liliana's leadership is characterized by her dedication to self-improvement, as well as her passion for helping others reach their potential.

Mason Belair, Grade 8

As the Vice President of the Beman Middle School Student CounciL, Mason Belair’s journey in leadership began at Spencer Elementary School, where he was frequently recognized as Student of the Month. Mason has consistently achieved high honors since 6th grade at Beman Middle School. His extracurricular activities include participation in the school news club, jazz band, and the Tri-M Music Honor Society. Mason's dedication to being a positive role model is evident in both his academic achievements and extracurricular involvement.
